Director, Category Development

Avanta Consulting has been retained to conduct a search for a Director of Category Development. Reporting to the Senior VP of Global Sales, this exciting role offers the opportunity to build a team and create a strategy and vision within our client's Category Development function.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Track category trends to provide insights and recommendations
  • Develop new tools as necessary to leverage information that drives revenue and profit growth
  • Identify opportunities both at the total category level and retailer level that equate to market share gains
  • Develop and execute category business plans across key categories
  • Develop recommendations that drive growth
  • Actively and collaboratively participate, and lead meetings with customers
  • Work with company leadership to define priorities and objectives
  • Apply a strong understanding of market dynamics
  • Work with the marketing team to highlight white space opportunities through in-market dynamics, analyzing syndicated data, and shopper/consumer trends
  • Impact(s) to the overall 4P ‘s: - Product, Placement, Promotion, Pricing
  • Hire, train, and develop Category Management team members. Develops & coordinates work plans for the Category Management resources
  • Lead cross functional projects as necessary
  • Actively engage cross functionally to provide expertise to internal staff. Remove roadblocks to enable change and organizational improvements
 
Successful candidates will have:
 
  • Bachelor’s degree required, MBA preferred
  • 10 – 15+ years’ experience in Category Management/Customer Management/ Insights and Sales Strategy and leading teams
  • Past Experience managing and leading a team or account with a Category Captain/Advisory Role
  • Extensive knowledge of syndicated data sources, i.e., ACNielsen, IRI, Household Panel, loyalty card data
  • Adept at analyzing and utilizing Consumer/Shopper Insights in Category Management sales stories and Category Management strategies
  • Strong financial insight required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative, identity opportunities and implement solutions with little direction
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Proven ability to negotiate and build positive business relationships
